What We Learned at Muster 015
We were able to attend Echelon Front’s Muster 15. Echelon Front teaches leadership. It was started by retired Navy Seals Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. Jocko and Leif took their lessons learned from the Navy and teach others how to apply the same leadership skills in day-to-day life
In this two-day event, Jocko and Leif, along with other instructors, went through various leadership lessons and ways to handle different situations.
The concept of “extreme ownership” is their main philosophy. It is the idea that you take ownership of everything, no matter what it is, in some way, shape or form. Their first book Extreme Ownership explains this in great detail. You own everything. Large or small. If you arrive at work late because of traffic on the road during a rain storm, it's your fault, not the rain. You should have checked the weather when you woke up and added extra time to your commute to avoid being late.
Their second book is called The Dichotomy of Leadership. The idea is that leadership is all about balance, that a leader cannot go too far into one extreme or the other. Going too far to one extreme or the other leads to a failure in leadership.
Along with extreme ownership, the Muster taught us about the laws of combat, which are:
cover and move, simple, prioritize and execute, and decentralized command. While at first these sound like military terms, which they are, they apply to everyday life.
Laws of Combat:
Cover and move: Support your teammates and move together towards common goals.
Simple: Keep things clear and concise. Communication must be understood by everyone.
Prioritize and execute: Prioritize what needs to be done and which can be delegated or done later.
Decentralized command: Empower your team to make decisions and support them on those decisions.
This Muster was a fantastic learning experience. We encourage you to check out www.echelonfront.com and the books Extreme Ownership and Dichotomy of Leadership.
