Mentoring vs. Coaching
What is the difference between mentoring and coaching?
Many times people use these two words interchangeably, but they are not the same.
Definition of Mentor: “an experienced and trusted adviser.” (dictionary.com)
A Mentor is somebody who guides you along the way. Just as the definition says, a mentor is an experienced and trusted advisor. They are somebody that you meet during your life that has experience in a certain topic, career, or lifestyle that you want to learn more about or emulate. This person is who you go to for advice or simply to learn how they dealt with a certain issue or event.
A mentor:
Talks about their story
They give advice
It’s mostly the Mentor talking
They have done/have what you seek to do/have
Definition of a coach: “trainer or instructor” (Dictionary.com)
A Coach is somebody that actively takes a role in helping you improve. They are a trainer. An instructor. Someone who assists you in gaining the knowledge and skills to achieve your goal. They may or may not be an expert in the subject you are trying to be an expert in. However, they assist you on the path to get there.
A Coach:
Ask about the person’s goals and priorities
Ask questions
It’s mostly the person (not the coach) talking
The Coach helps them discover the answer and strength within themselves.
The key to being a good Mentor or Coach is that you do not need to be exclusively one or the other. A good Mentor or Coach can move in between these roles depending on the situation.
